When it comes to creating an oasis for relaxation, entertainment, and hydrotherapy, a 9-person hot tub is a great choice. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll cover the many questions that will help you make an informed decision. These important details will help you navigate the hot tub buying process.

9-Person Hot Tub Dimensions

A nine-person spa falls into the large category. On average, these 9-person hot tubs measure approximately 9 to 10 feet in length, 7 to 8 feet in width, and 3 to 4 feet in depth.

In this way, the dimensions are completely dependent on the hot tub manufacturer and model you choose. It’s essential to check the specific dimensions of the hot tub model you’re interested in, as it does vary.

How Many Gallons in a 9-Person Hot Tub?

The water capacity of a 9-person hot tub largely depends on the specific hot tub company, model, and design. On average, 9-person hot tubs can hold anywhere from 600 to 800 gallons of water. The greater water capacity allows for a more relaxed and comfortable soaking experience for you and your friends or family.

How Much does a 9-Person Hot Tub Weigh?

As with any hot tub, there are so many factors that go into the weight.  The weight of a 9-person hot tub varies depending on the model, features, and the material it’s made from. Ask yourself these questions: Is it solid material or inflatable? Aluminum or steel? Plastic or wood? How much is it insulated? What about pipes and water and people?

On average theses spas can range from 800 to 1,200 lbs. (dry) to 6,000 to 9,000+ lbs (filled with water and people). It’s important to know what you’re looking for beforehand as there are so many options. You’ll want to pick a 9-person hot tub that brings you the most value.

It’s crucial that you have a solid foundation to place a nine-person spa. Install a thick concrete pad or reinforced deck if you don’t have one already. Also, check with an engineer before installing to make sure your spot will support the weight of the spa.

9-Person Hot Tub Layouts

There are four common layouts for a 9-person hot tub. The shape of the spa is likely a rectangle, but the layout can range from bench seating with a central area, lounger and bench combination, captain’s chairs for upright and social seating, or a mix of upright and reclining seats.

9-Person Hot Tub Prices

The price of a 9-person hot tub can vary significantly based on the model and the features you select. Generally, these hot tubs are an investment due to their size and capabilities. Depending on the options and accessories you choose, a nine-person spa will start in the range of $8,000 and go up as high as $20,000 or more. When you’re making a decision this costly, it’s important to keep in mind that while the initial cost may seem high, owning a 9-person hot tub can provide years of relaxation, entertainment, and health benefits, making it a worthwhile investment in your well-being.

Some questions to ask yourself when considering the price are: What are they made of, and how well will they hold up in the long term? Is the spa well insulated? How much plumbing does the pump have to run, and how many pumps are running your system? What type of cover is available for the spa of your dreams, and does it insulate against cold or inclement weather? Does it have a warranty? What type?

Since you are looking for a hot tub of significant size and cost, it’s important that you make sure you’re getting a high-quality spa that will last you years to come.

Whether you’re hoping to relax after a long day or throw a backyard party with family and friends, a seven-person hot tub is the perfect solution. Seven-person spas offer plenty of space for everyone to relax, without feeling crowded. However, figuring out the logistics of a spa can get tricky if you don’t plan for it in advance.

Here are the key details to consider when looking for a hot tub and the specific benefits you’re looking to get from your purchase.

7 Person Hot Tub Dimensions

A seven-person spa can range in size from six to eight feet in length, five to six feet in width, and three to four feet in height. They are made specifically to hold more people more comfortably. Common dimensions you might see for 7 person spa are 7’10” x 7’10” or 7’7” x 6’8″.

How Many Gallons of Water Does an 7-Person Hot Tub Hold?

Typically, an seven-person spa is going to hold somewhere around 475-650 gallons. The amount can vary depending on size, shape, and number of jets.

How Much Does an 7-Person Hot Tub Weigh?

It’s important to know the weight of your hot tub so you can place it on the correct foundation and so you understand that more water and people equals more chemicals and maintenance. Luckily, Bullfrog Spas has worked hard to provide a number of simple water care solutions.

The dry weight (when the tub is empty) is likely to be somewhere around 750-1000 lbs. When filled, the spa will weigh somewhere in the range of 6,000-6,500 lbs.

Recommended foundations are 4 inch thick concrete, concrete pavers, pea gravel, or a reinforced deck.

7-Person Hot Tub Layouts

When it comes to seven-person hot tubs, the layout options open up tremendously, giving you more choices than a smaller spa. The most common layout is going to be square, with a full-size seat in each of four corners, then a seat between each corner. Some other layouts include rectangular, L-shaped, U-shaped, and Island.

Seven-person hot tubs with a lounger are typically more rectangular and may even feature a double lounger on one end. This allows for three other seats on either side.

7-Person Hot Tub Prices

When it comes to price, items to consider are brand, add-on options, and personalization choices.  For a good quality seven-person hot tub, the base price can start anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000 and up.

A five-person spa is a great option for those wanting a medium-sized hot tub. If you aren’t certain about the size of hot tub you’re wanting, 5 is an excellent place to start. It’s perfect for any family, friend, or neighbor get-together.

This guide will discuss the many questions that come before owning a five-person spa as well as factors to consider when choosing one. We also offer a buying guide to five-person hot tub to help you get the most bang for your buck.

Dimensions of a Five-Person Hot Tub

Depending on which brand you’re looking at, the dimensions of any hot tub are going to vary one way or another, but as a rule of thumb, these spas are generally between six to eight feet in length, five to seven feet in width, and three to four feet in diameter. Five-person spas can be circular, squared, or slightly rectangular in shape.

Layout Options

When it comes to the layout of a five-person spa, you have a range of options to choose from as 5 person spas are some of the bigger spa choices. Similar to a six-person spa, most commonly, this spa has a jetted seat in each of four corners, and then another one on each of two sides, while the other sides allow for entry/exit steps, and filter placement. In some cases, a spa might have a lounge seat that allows for one person to lounge, while two additional seats are located in each corner and side of the spa. A round hot tub option usually has bench seating.

How Many Gallons of Water Does a Five-Person Hot Tub Hold?

Speaking of filling and maintaining your spa, you may be wondering how many gallons a five-person hot tub can hold. Most hold between 300-400 gallons of water. It sounds like a lot, but when you consider the amount of time spa water lasts versus how many gallons it takes to fill a regular-sized bathtub (around 80 gallons) or to run your shower for ten minutes (25 gallons), that’s not an unreasonable amount of water.

How Much Does a Five-Person Hot Tub weigh?

Keep in mind that each brand and size is going to vary widely, but generally, most five-person hot tubs weigh 500-1000 pounds empty, and then with water and people, can get up between 3,500-5,000 lbs.

The one exception here would be the inflatable variety of hot tubs, which start out around 70lbs, empty. And around 3,200-4,000 lbs. of water with people.

Can I Get a Five-Person Plug and Play Spa?

Although most plug-and-play (110V) model spas are made to seat two to three people, you will be able to find a couple of 110 V Spa options that fit 5 people. The Bullfrog Spas X6R model for example can be custom ordered in a 110 V configuration. Keep in mind that plug-and-play spas don’t have the same amount of power as other spas and, because of this, aren’t able to produce the same amount of massaging jet power.

Five Person Hot Tub Prices

The price of a five-person hot tub can vary depending on the brand, features, and materials used. However, you can expect to pay anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000 for a high-quality five-person hot tub. Some features to consider are brand, features, materials, size, and delivery.

If you’re an empty-nester, a couple without kids, or enjoying the single life, these three-person spa options are perfect for you. Compact and intimate, these hot tubs fit into tight spaces indoors or outdoors without sacrificing comfort. Enjoy a romantic night with your spouse or enjoy a private soak after a workout and let the affordable hydromassage features take your worries away.

Bullfrog Spas 3-Person Hot Tub Models

The Bullfrog Spas luxurious three-person A5L model offers high-quality hydrotherapy at a price that will leave you smiling, and a size that might just fit in your super-limited amount of space. Not only that, it can be personalized, thanks to the Bullfrog Spas patented JetPak Therapy System®. This model includes three JetPaks to promote the most customized relaxation experience you will find in the market. It also includes an ergonomic lounge seat, which is contoured to your body, and features a number of leg, foot, calf, and wrist jets built into the shell of the spa.

Another option is the Bullfrog Spas X5L, which does not include the JetPak Therapy System, but does feature an all-new design that includes upgraded in-shell jets that offer the most versatile massage you’ll find in a conventional-style hot tub.

Consider this, too. Both Bullfrog Spas models can fit through most doorway or gate openings, and are designed to be placed on a reinforced patio or deck that is rated to hold the filled weight of a spa.

3-person Hot Tub Dimensions and Layouts

Dimensions:

The Bullfrog Spas A5L Model: 7’ (2.13m) x 5’8” (1.73m) x 31” (.79m)

The Bullfrog Spas X5L Model: 7’ (2.13m) x 5’8” (1.73m) x 31” (.79m)

3-Person Spa Layouts

The A5L model features a full-size lounger, as well as two other spots that allow for a cozy, intimate hot tub experience. You might also notice that Bullfrog Spas has somehow managed to fit three entire JetPaks into this small spa. It may be small, but the massage power sure packs a punch!

The X5L model also features a full-size lounge seat and two additional spots, making these model options ideal for the use of two or three people. X Series models do not feature JetPaks, but the newly designed X Series jets, while not interchangeable, are still incredibly powerful, as well as adjustable.

Here are a few additional details you might find helpful.

  • A typical 3-person hot tub holds somewhere between 250-300 gallons of water.
  • The average 3-person hot tub weighs around 500 pounds when empty, and up to 3000 pounds when filled with water. (Don’t forget to add in the weight of the people who will sit inside it when you’re reinforcing your hot tub pad!)
  • The average price for a 3-person hot tub completely depends on the spa options, the quality of the manufacturing and materials, and the way the spa is built, so the numbers are going to vary widely, but expect them to start somewhere around $4,000-$10,000 and go up from there.

Can I Get a 3-Person Plug and Play Hot Tub?

If you’re wondering about electrical requirements, this is probably a question that has come up for you. A plug-and-play version of a hot tub is one that can be run on a lower voltage than larger spas might require. In the case of both Bullfrog Spa models that fit into the 3-Person lounger hot tub category, both of them can be optionally ordered from your dealer with 120V configuration.

3-Person Hot Tub Reviews

“We have absolutely loved our spa. We have had it a year and it is so easy to maintain. It’s the perfect size for us. And I can’t say enough about those AMAZING JetPaks! It doesn’t take up a tremendous amount of space and there is plenty of space for the two of us. The finish still looks brand new.” – Patricia M.

“With the three replaceable JetPaks and its compact size, this little spa really delivers big bang for our relaxing and hydrotherapy needs.” – Joey V.

“I have been really enjoying my A5L hot tub. The JetPaks have great pressure where you need them. Glad I included the stereo, sounds great while releasing my stress away. A lot of extra features which only add to the enjoyment!” – Scott B.

When you’re considering adding a pool or swim spa to your home or backyard, when you begin your initial research, you may feel a little bit overwhelmed with the potential options and possibilities. Sometimes, there really can be too much of a good thing. This is one of those times, right? But no worries! We’re here to help.

Your household needs are going to be different from others, so the determining factors for your decision have to be dependent on what’s best for you and your household. Let’s explore the differences between a swim spa and a traditional swimming pool to help you make a solid decision about which is best for you.

Swim Spa vs Pool Cost

When you purchase a swim spa, it comes as one all-inclusive unit, so your up-front costs are not going to change much. You will still have to provide some electrical wiring and a level hot tub pad for it to be placed on, but once you have those things handled, your swim spa’s components are all included in your purchase, so you know exactly what you’re in-for, cost-wise. Swim spas are typically more budget-friendly than traditional pools. The cost of a typical swim spa ranges from $25,000-$50,000, depending on the size and features.

There are many aspects that influence the cost of a swimming pool, such as the pool type, size, shape, features, and permits. Price will vary widely depending on where you live, your yard design and space, the complications that might arise from digging deep into the ground in your yard, etc. Then you have to decide if you’re getting a fiberglass shell or going with a gunite one. Are you adding additional features, like a tile surround, pool decking, and will you also be digging a spa that is separate from your pool? How many pumps will your chosen size require and what is the maintenance system going to cost in time and money?

All the extra items that you can’t get in a swim spa are going to cost you. On average, an in-ground swimming pool can cost anywhere from $30,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the factors mentioned above. Keep in mind that this is just the initial construction cost, and there are ongoing maintenance expenses to consider as well.

No matter what the initial estimate looks like, you should be prepared to pay around 35% down before construction can begin—and be sure to estimate in some contingency funds because construction always, always has variables that come up.

DESIGN MY SPA & GET A PRICE

Swim Spa vs Pool Size

Swim spas range in size from 12-25+ feet long, so they are much easier to fit into smaller backyard spaces. Even if your yard is bigger, the size of a swim spa allows you to have a little bit of a lot of things. A BBQ area, seating, swimming area, spa, etc. All at the same time!

Let’s be honest here. When it comes to parties or large family activities, pools have more space for playing. You can install a diving board and have a deep end, which is not available in a swim spa. Because each backyard pool is custom installed, you have more opportunities to choose the size, shape, depth, and functionality of your pool. And, you know, it’s possible to add a water slide to a traditional pool, which is kind of cool—if you like waterslides (and who doesn’t?).

Swim Spa vs Pool Installation

As mentioned in the cost section, most swim spas come as a single all-inclusive unit that is free-standing, so when it comes to installation, as long as you have the pad and electrical wiring ready to go prior to delivery, installation can be done in as little as a single day. It might take another day to fill with water and get the chemical system started, then some time to get the water heated to your desired temperature (since most swim spas come with an integrated water heater—another bonus!) so your spa can realistically be ready to use within two days of delivery, if not sooner.

Traditional pools almost always require on-site project construction type work. You know the drill, right? Excavation, pouring concrete, building a deck (prior to or after installation, depending on the type of pool you’ve chosen). All of this requires permits, drawings, mapping, and other pre-construction prep. You’re looking at a minimum of weeks or months to get your pool installed and usable. If you’re not in a hurry, and you prefer a larger body of water that can be dug deeper than a swim spa, it might be worth the wait—but if those things don’t matter, the complication of installation is really a point to consider.

Swim Spa vs Pool Maintenance

No matter what you choose, there’s going to be some maintenance involved. Luckily, because a swim spa is an all-in-one kind of deal that usually includes a pressure filtration system. For instance, Bullfrog Spas Swim Series models come with Clear Comfort, an award-winning AOP system that delivers the easiest way to get the best, healthiest and most enjoyable water with the lowest possible chlorine levels.

A traditional pool may have options to add on a gravity system and in rare cases, possibly a pressure filtration system, but those are going to be cost and labor additions, no matter what you do.

Another point to consider is that swim spa water filters faster than a traditional pool. Because the filtration system in a swim spa is pressure filtered, it is constantly filtering water, which means that the entire body of water can be completely filtered in a matter of minutes, whereas a larger, traditional pool is typically fully filtered every twelve to eighteen hours.

Part of the process of designing and installing your pool should include deciding on a maintenance system. You’ll need a pump, a filtration system (or two), a cleaning process, and possibly a safety cover. It’s important that you research these system possibilities and find one that is not overwhelming to you. This is one of the sections where a swim spa is appealing to many people because most manufacturers have these systems pre-built into each spa unit, and all you have to do is follow their instructions for maintenance.

Other Points to Consider

Fitness and Health Benefits

Watch the video to learn how Flora Duffy uses her swim spa after her training and for her recovery.

If you’re making this purchase with fitness in mind, most swim spas come with current systems that are specific to workout programs and conditioning. They are not the greatest for swimming laps, per se, but they are better than a regular pool if you want to be able to adjust the resistance and power of the current you’re swimming against.

When it comes to rehabilitation, adjustability is often key because you start out on a lower power setting, and build up as injured muscles regain strength. This is not possible in a traditional pool.

If your goal is to swim laps in still water, a pool will probably do the trick. However, if your goal is to strengthen your swim stroke or your speed or to rehab injured muscles, it’s important to keep in mind that traditional pools do not come with swim current systems that can be adjusted for these purposes. You’re less likely to be able to purchase and use accessories like row bars, exercise bars, and resistance bands that are designed to be used with a current system.

Did we mention the Bullfrog Spas Swim Series Zero Gravity Spa Hammock? This accessory is unlike anything you’ll see anywhere else. Imagine the feeling of being suspended in water, free from gravity’s grasp, while feeling the soothing effects of swim current waves moving beneath you. You simply cannot get this effect in a traditional pool.

Portability and Design Flexibility

We discussed this in the installation section, but it bears mentioning more in depth here. A swim spa is a fully contained unit, which means that it can be moved around as a whole unit. Let’s say a few years from now you decide to completely redesign your entire backyard. Cool. No digging up a pool and having to rebuild it, because all you have to do is pick up the swim spa and move it to whatever position and placement that suits your new design best. In addition to this, if you ever decide you’d like your swim spa placed indoors, well. That’s possible too.

Well. As awesome as traditional pools can be, once they’re installed, they really can’t be moved or adjusted, so any updates or changes to your yard must be made around the pool. This might not be a big deal if you have a large yard space, but if you don’t, installing an in-ground pool might eliminate the possibility of also having a BBQ space or other gathering space in your yard.

Energy Costs

These days, swim spas are designed specifically with energy efficiency in mind. They now come fully insulated, some super-insulated, and most brands provide a cover that keeps the heat inside. They also require less water to fill and need refilling less often, which is something to consider if you happen to live in a desert area that often experiences drought conditions.

In-ground pools are typically designed to be insulated naturally, using the ground in which they’re buried. When that ground is frozen, so is the water in the pool. If you happen to live in a place with really harsh winters, you might have to invest in a water heater, or your pool will likely need to be drained of water and the pipes blown out in order to avoid damage to the pool and pump system.

Most pools hold a lot more water than the typical swim spa, which means the pumps and heater (if you have one) will naturally consume more energy. In addition to this, if your pool does not have a cover, it’s constantly exposed to the elements, which means any heat or warmth in the water is escaping or evaporating into the environment and that environment is escaping into your pool. Leaves, dust, rain—you name it, your filtration system is fighting it, which means it’s working harder and consuming more energy.

Year-Round Use

Swim spas offer a versatile solution for year-round enjoyment, thanks to their unique combination of a swimming pool and hot tub features. During the colder months, the hot tub aspect of a swim spa provides warmth and relaxation even when the temperatures drop. This makes it ideal for soothing sore muscles, relieving stress, and enjoying therapeutic hydrotherapy sessions, regardless of the weather outside. Additionally, the hot tub feature allows for social gatherings and family bonding in a comfortable and inviting environment.

As the seasons change, the swim spa can seamlessly transition into a refreshing swimming pool, providing a space for aquatic exercise, recreational swimming, and cooling off during the warmer months. This versatility ensures that swim spas can be enjoyed throughout the year, offering both relaxation and fitness benefits to users regardless of the season.

How to Decide Which is Best for You

This is something only you can decide, but it might help to consider the points we’ve just discussed. How big is your backyard? What is your intention in using it? Will you need/want to use it year-round or seasonally? How much time are you able or willing to dedicate to maintenance? Would you also like a high-quality spa experience with your pool?

When hot tubs were originally becoming a thing, gas heaters were really the only option, aside from manually heating the water and dumping it in the tub one pitcher at a time. They weren’t always hot because they weren’t able to maintain heat the way they are today, so anytime someone wanted to use the spa, they had to first heat it up (which can take hours). And who has time for that?

Back then, spas weren’t necessarily insulated, or covered with thick covers the way they are today. The hot tub industry has come a long way since then. When portable spas became trendy in the late 70’s, it was necessary for manufacturers to find an alternative way to heat the water that was more practical for day-to-day use. This is when electric heaters were born.

Gas heat is still an option for some hot tubs, but anymore, most are heated electrically. Here are a few ways in which the two are different so you can know which type of hot tub is right for you..

Benefits of Natural Gas Heated Hot Tubs

In a lot of cases, gas powered spa heaters are installed outside of the actual spa cabinet in order for them to be connected to a gas line and enable the pilot light to be accessed.

Some benefits of heating your spa with natural gas include a lower cost less to operate and maintain, and that they heat up quickly. Natural gas prices vary depending on where you live, but in general, is more cost efficient in the long term. And where an electric heater can take hours to bring up your spa temperature, a natural gas one can add one to two degrees per minute, which means the owner can leave the resting temperature much lower and still be able to use the spa fairly regularly.

Downsides of Natural Gas Heating

As with everything, there are pros and cons. In the case of natural gas heaters, the biggest one is the cost. Initially, adding a gas spa heater is going to start at around $1000 and go up from there. This doesn’t include burying a gas line from the meter to the hot tub, or hooking it up, so that’s an additional cost that can get very pricey, because running natural gas lines is something that must be done by professionals who are certified to work with gas lines.

Also it’s important to keep in mind that natural gas is flammable, and has the potential for dangerous accidents. Chances are low, but it’s still an issue to keep in mind. Add to this issue that a gas heater can’t be placed inside the spa cabinet because it needs fresh air and exhaust in order to work, so it can’t be visually hidden the way electric heaters can.

Energy Costs

Let’s break this down a bit more. Assuming that your hot tub has the same rate of heat loss no matter what heater type you’re using, a gas heater can only be approximately 80% efficient, where electric ones are (in most cases) closer to 100% efficient.

However, when you’re looking at efficiency, there are a number of factors to consider, like the size of your spa, the outdoor air temperature (and wind speeds), and the quality of the hot tub’s insulation and cover. The best way to compare energy costs is to compare your natural gas furnace costs to electric air conditioning costs. The more efficient the system, the lower the cost.

Availability

At the time this article was written, you can still get a natural gas heater for your hot tub, but they’re mostly only available for custom, in-ground spas, and are much harder to find in a portable spa. The bigger trick might be finding a licensed contractor to run gas line from the meter to your heater (which is an additional cost that can often supersede the cost of the heater itself). However, there are several states discussing legislation that would essentially ban natural gas heaters in spas, so if you’re determined to invest in a natural gas heater, keep in mind that it may eventually have to be replaced for environmental law reasons.

Benefits of Electric Hot Tub Heating

There are a lot of Benefits to choosing a hot tub with an electric heater. For one thing, since most portable spas only come with electric heating options, you get a much more superior selection to choose from. Another huge benefit is that electric heated hot tubs are cheaper and easier to maintain and repair, which saves you money in the long run.

Speaking of saving money, let’s talk about efficiency. Electric hot tub heaters have come a long way in the last few years, and they become more efficient with each new design. Add to this that technology has allowed for better insulation and high-quality covers that help keep the heat inside the spa longer, and you have an efficient heater that is really hard to beat. Not to mention, electric is better for the environment.

Downsides of Electric Heating

Basically, the only downside we can find is that the spa takes longer to heat initially. However, keep in mind that once your spa reaches the desired temperature, the electric heater will maintain that heat, keeping your spa ready for use whenever you like. Be spontaneous!

Hot Tub Electrical Costs

Depending on the brand you choose, you can get a hot tub that is highly efficient. For instance, every Bullfrog Spas® model is fully insulated, and comes with a thick, high-quality cover, along with one of the most efficient heating and plumbing systems available to provide power needed for hot tub use.

Hot Tub Electrical Hook Up Cost

The cost to install hot tub electrical can vary depending on a variety of factors, such as location, complexity of installation, and local building codes. On average, the cost to install electrical for your hot tub can be between $500 to $3000.

Availability

Let’s be honest. Electric is here to stay, which means the majority of hot tubs (if not ALL) are available with electric heating as at least an option. The availability of this heating option is basically endless. Plus, there’s the little benefit of it not staring in the face of legislation that might cause them to be banned. So, there’s also that.

Which is Better?

In most cases, a spa with an electric heater is both cheaper, and simpler in both the short term and the long term. Consider what each one costs to maintain and repair, along with the lower cost of initial startup, and potential legislation, electric seems to be more practical.

Hot tubs are a great way to escape the cold, but if you live in a freezing cold climate, can you except your spa to endure harsh wind, rain, and snow?

Luckily for you, there are a few cold weather hot tubs built to endure tough winters. The best hot tubs for cold climates are extremely energy efficient, have strong, tight-fitting covers, and are built with weather-proof frames and parts.

Efficiency

Why would an energy efficient spa be important if you live in a cold climate? Well, in colder weather, your hot tub will have to work a little harder to keep the water temperature high. This requires energy, and in turn, your money.

But how can you tell if a hot tub is energy efficient? Make sure to check the hot tub’s insulation type as well as it’s plumbing design.

Here’s some important information to know about insulation and plumbing.

Insulation

hot tubs insulation difference
In general, hot tubs have one of two types of insulation systems: perimeter or full foam. Many companies will try to tell you that perimiter systems do just as well as full foam systems. They want you to believe this because it would cost them twice as much money to manufacter the higher quality full foam system.

To see if those claims were true, Hot Tub University did a study comparing the two systems to see which one was the best insulated hot tub.

Based on their study, they concluded that “full foam spas should perform more than twice as well as the best perimeter systems out there. And three to four times better than the worst ones!”

This study shows that if you want the best outdoor hot tub for a cold climate, you need one with a full foam insulation system.

Plumbing

Conventional spas are built with hundreds of feet of tubing to get the water to each jet. This is an outdated design that wastes energy and your money.

Because Bullfrog Spas are built differently, they use up to 90% less plumbing. Fewer pipes and tubes equals less energy needed to transfer water to the jets.

In addition, most of the water delivery system in a Bullfrog Spa is inside of the proprietary H2Air Manifold on the JetPak and is submerged in the hot water. Any heat from water in the JetPak manifold transfers directly to the spa water rather than being lost to the cold outside environment.

Look for an efficient hot tub brand with full foam insulation and an advanced water delivery system that keeps your energy bill low, even in cold weather.

Cover

Make sure your hot tub comes with a stong, durable cover. It should be able to handle the weight of snow after a heavy snowstorm as well as stay closed on an extra windy day.

In general, the best hot tub covers for cold weather are the ones made by the hot tub’s manufacturer. This is because they will be precision made to tightly fit the hot tub model and keep the cold air out.

Construction

hot tub on rooftop

Unfortunately, many conventional hot tub manufacturers still use wood or metal to build their spas. These materials aren’t durable, especially if you live in a cold climate with lots of rain or snow. The wood rots and the metal corrodes.

The best hot tub for cold weather should be built using more advanced materials. For example, Bullfrog Spas are built on a sturdy molded ABS frame that will never rot or rust.

Look for high-quality materials that you can rely on for years to come.

Winter hot tub tips

Did you know that the best hot tubs don’t need to be winterized? Unless you plan on leaving your hot tub unused for more than 6 weeks in a row, there shouldn’t be a need to winterize. The quality materials and energy-efficient design will keep your pipes from freezing.

Something else to consider is where you plan on installing your hot tub. Bullfrog Spas recommends placing your spa close to your home and near a door or other entrance. This will keep the time your body needs to be in the cold weather to a minimum.

You can also improve your spa environment by either partially or fully enclosing it to block it from the wind. This will not only add to your enjoyment but also keep your spa protected from the weather and even more energy efficient.

Bullfrog Spas Reviews During Winter

Hot tub in snowy backyard

“I love my tub. it is easy to care for, it has all the JetPaks that I want, and in Michigan in the winter there is nothing better than jumping in when it’s cold to warm yourself up!” – Becky T.

“Living in Montana it gets pretty cold in the winter. As the fall comes to a close so far the coldest has been 14 degrees. Chilly getting in but then pure heaven! Last night we enjoyed drinks in the spa while watching a beautiful moon rise up from the mountains to our east. This is one of the best purchases we’ve made and are enjoying it every day!” – Bill R.

“We’re greatly enjoying our Bullfrog Spa through our Canadian winter. Very impressed with the entire system and each member of our family has a preferred JetPak.” – Michael P.

“Absolutely love the hot tub! Quality construction leads to efficient operation. The tub is well insulated. We lost power for two days due to winter storm and sub-freezing temps and water temp only dropped to 92 degrees, set at 100 normally. Highly recommend Bullfrog Spas!!” – Matt R.

“The hot tub has made it through two Wisconsin winters that included well below zero temps and feet of snow. It has been a real pleasure to enjoy” – Debra W.

Details, including products or features, are subject to change without notice. This comparison guide is intended for informational purposes, but please refer to any brand or manufacturer websites for the most current information.

Company Overview

The 1990’s was a big decade for the conception and creation of hot tub companies. Apparently, consumers were hungry for relaxation, and a few young entrepreneurs took their hunger and created a couple of successful spa businesses out of it. Let’s take a look into a comparison of Bullfrog Spas® vs Arctic Spas® so you can find the best hot tub for you.

Arctic Spas®

According to their website, Arctic Spas® was founded in 1994 by “a unique group of guys” who grew up in rural communities of western Canada. Each Arctic Spa is conceived and created in the small town of Thorsby, Alberta, Canada. They claim to be a company based on small-town principles.

Arctic Spas® take pride in being hand built and high tech. Water-jet robots work in their construction area while craftsmen hand-assemble cabinets made of western red cedar. These components then meet in a blending of technology and personal touch.

Bullfrog Spas®

Bullfrog Spas® was officially founded in 1996 by David Ludlow, the son of a pool builder. In 1989, after taking way too many service calls for other spas, David imagined a hot tub with modular jetted seat backs that would contain the jets and the bulk of the spa’s plumbing. This design placed most of the hoses and fittings inside the spa’s main body of water. If they happened to eventually develop a small leak, it wouldn’t affect performance or require costly repairs. These seat-back jet arrays would become what’s known today as the JetPak®. Seven years later, Bullfrog International LC was born. Bullfrog Spas is headquartered near Salt Lake City, UT and all hot tubs and swim spas are assembled there.

Bullfrog Spas’ patented JetPak Therapy System® originally focused on reliability, but another major advantage of JetPaks™ is personalized therapy. Customers can customize their hydromassage experience at the time of purchase with the specific JetPaks they like best. In addition, their experience can now be further personalized at any time by moving JetPaks from seat to seat to suit individual preferences.

Jets and Therapy Comparison

Arctic Spas®

Arctic Spas® feature patented rotating, bearing-less that provide massages that range from light and refined to deep and invigorating. The pressure on some is adjustable and they do not use ball bearings for movement, which means less chance of jet failure. The upgraded jets come in stainless steel, rather than plastic, so that’s a nice touch.

Bullfrog Spas®

Each Bullfrog Spas JetPak provides a unique hydromassage experience by targeting different areas of your back, neck, and shoulders and varies in power and intensity. Users can choose from 16 different JetPaks. Personalize your spa by selecting your favorites, so you’re able to find the perfect massage for you and anyone who is using your spa regularly. Each JetPak also has a therapy dial so you can change the intensity of the massage on any given day.

Relax in a premium lounger, enjoy a full-body massage in a deep seat, or hang out in a shallow seat to avoid getting your hair wet. With varying seat types and depths, your whole family can enjoy the spa together.

Quality and Reliability Comparison

hot tub on rooftop

Arctic Spas®

In looking up the differences in this category, we found a number of different levels of quality available to Arctic Spas® customers. So, some Arctic Spas® models come with an ABS base that is fully insulated. (Remember, the base is just the bottom of the spa, not the entire frame.) Others come with a “sturdy, insulated platform wood floor.” And still other Arctic Spas® models come with a fiberglass base.

When it comes to the shell, here, too, are multiple options. One option is an ABS backed acrylic. This means the acrylic is heat-formed, but thin, and then backed by layers of ABS to give it strength. The second option is also acrylic, but it is molded together with many layers of acrylic, and then backed with fiberglass. They are so confident in this model of shell that they offer a lifetime warranty on this particular shell structure (which is only available in select models).

Now, let’s talk cabinets. Arctic Spas® builds the cabinets, or exteriors of their spas, using Western Red cedar. They claim it’s furniture grade, finished with a special protective treatment, and built to thrive in any environment, They also offer a series of cabinets that have the appearance of natural wood, but are made out of synthetic composite materials, and which come in three color options.

Arctic spas® offers covers in multiple sizes, thickness, and quality, but they are considered an upgrade, or an add-on to your spa package. You can also add a vacuum-type seal to a cover purchased through Arctic Spas.

Bullfrog Spas®

Each Bullfrog Spa is built on our patented EnduraFrame™ support structure, a sturdy molded ABS spa frame made with no wood or metal so it will never rot or corrode. This is the basis for every model of hot tub sold by Bullfrog Spas.

The molded ABS EnduraBase™, EnduraBeam™ structural columns and other EnduraFrame™ components are precision aligned the exact same way every time with no human error. Extra supports are added in high-usage areas to strengthen overall spa integrity and support the thousands of pounds of water the spa will hold.

Bullfrog Spas shells are heat molded using thick layers of acrylic. Acrylic is a hard durable plastic that is resistant to chemical and UV damage. Acrylic is also known for its durability and longevity. In addition, all Bullfrog Spas models are fully insulated using a 100% closed-cell, full foam design. This insulates the spa completely to prevent heat escape, even in the coldest climates.

Every spa made by Bullfrog Spas features a proprietary EternaWood™ Cabinet, which is made from ABS similar to the material used to create the EnduraBase and EnduraFrame.

Bullfrog Spas’ Patio Peformance™ cover design keeps cool air out and prevents heat from escaping. These well-insulated covers are designed specifically for your Bullfrog Spa to maximize its energy efficiency. These premium-level covers come standard on every Bullfrog Spa.

Now, because Bullfrog Spas are built with the patented JetPak Therapy System™, they have up to 90% less plumbing than conventional spas. This vastly simplified pipework means fewer holes, fittings, and hoses, and most importantly, fewer opportunities for potential leaks. With the elimination of as many failure points as possible in your spa, you can have peace of mind that your Bullfrog Spa will work reliably for years to come.

Energy Efficiency Comparison

Arctic Spas®

According to their website, Arctic Spas® has chosen their motors and pumps according to water flow and efficiency. “Higher flow rates during filtration do a much better job of pulling contaminants into the filter.” In order to accomplish this while consuming the least amount of power, they sourced out high-efficiency pumps that “have a low-speed amp draw that rivals a circulation pump but still move approximately 50 gal/min through the filters during filtration. And on high-speed, they accomplish the same thing; better flow with lower power consumption.”

Bullfrog Spas®

Because Bullfrog Spas are built with the patented JetPak Therapy System™, they utilize less plumbing. Less plumbing equals less friction and less energy used to get water to the jets. In addition, most of the water delivery system in a Bullfrog Spa is inside of the proprietary H2Air Manifold on the JetPak® and is submerged in the hot water. Any heat from water in the JetPak manifold transfers directly to the spa water rather than being lost to the cold outside environment. Add these factors to the fully insulated construction and the high-quality cover, and Bullfrog Spa models save energy costs long-term.

Style and Design Comparison

Arctic Spas®

In addition to the many options we discussed in the construction portion of this article, Arctic Spas® offers five shell colors to choose from. For their spa cabinets, they offer the western red cedar and 3 color options of synthetic wood.

Bullfrog Spas

The Bullfrog Spas website offers in-depth descriptions about the style of each of our spa series.’ For instance, “M Series™ spas combine intuitive functionality, gorgeous aesthetics, and the most versatile layouts ever seen in portable spas, together with Bullfrog Spas®’ legendary JetPak Therapy System™, to create the most elite spa experience available today.”

About the award-winning STIL models, it says, “STIL™ spas set the standard in modern hot tub design and functionality. Elegantly modern, STIL represents a new concept in holistic wellness.”

Water Care Comparison

Arctic Spas®

Arctic Spas® feature Active Skim Filtration, which maintains some type of surface skimming, where contaminants at the surface are drawn into the filter, where larger particles are trapped in an integrated basket. They also offer a particle trapping system that is supposed to eliminate the need for de-foaming, clarifiers, filter cleaners, and coagulating chemicals.

All Arctic Spas® come standard with an adjustable filter cycle system.

Bullfrog Spas

Bullfrog Spas offers the “FROG® @ease® water care system, which creates fresh clean mineral water, while self-regulating SmartChlor® technology maintains low chlorine levels. With FROG® @ease® in your spa, you’ll use up to 75% less chlorine, reducing the need for shock treatments to once a month, while protecting swimwear and skin.” “EOS™ O3 is a revolutionary automatic water purification system that eliminates impurities using the powerful oxidation properties of O3 gas. This unique three-part system works by generating ample amounts of O3 gas, combining it with spa water in an isolated high-contact mixing chamber, and then filtering out over 99% of excess ozone to prevent negative off-gassing effects.”

“The dedicated Wellspring™ filtration pump is a quiet, vibration-free circulation pump that is more than eight times as effective as standard filtration pumps.”

Conclusion

When it comes to making large purchases, it’s always a good idea to know what you’re getting into before you make a purchase and schedule for delivery. A great way to do this is to read customer hot tub reviews. What other consumers have to say about each brand can be educational and often brings up thoughts, ideas, or points of view you wouldn’t otherwise have considered. In addition, it helps to look at multiple reviews that cover a multitude of topics, so you get a bigger picture of the ins and outs that other hot tub purchasers have experienced.

Good luck with buying your hot tub!

Luxury is an interesting word when it comes to spas. So many companies claim their spas are “luxury” level but are they what YOU would consider luxury? The questions to ask start with what you are looking for in a spa, and why. Once you have figured that out, it’s all a matter of comparing which spa delivers those things in the best way. We’ve put together a comparison guide series of articles to help you understand how all the different spa brands compare. In this article, we’re breaking down the difference between Bullfrog Spas and Marquis Spas.

Company Overviews

Marquis Spas

Marquis Spas is an employee-owned company that has been around since 1980 and include low-pressure jets for a tension-relieving massage. They offer a cleaning device that can be set to clean half an hour after use, and a micro-bubble system that they claim has anti-aging benefits. Marquis spas range between mid-level and luxury levels, some of which offer something they call, “Optimized Flow Technology.”

Bullfrog Spas

Bullfrog Spas started out as a family-owned operation, and it still functions like one, though it has multiplied in size exponentially since the company was founded in 1996. Bullfrog Spas feature the patented JetPak Therapy System® which allows users to customize their jets in the seat they choose for a personalized massage experience that no other hot tub company can offer.

Every portion of a Bullfrog Spa is made to high-level specifications, from the proprietary EnduraBase, EnduraFrame, and insulation, to the plumbing, JetPaks, the electronics, and the shell, and the warranty we offer gives buyers confidence that we believe in each individual component, as well as the spa itself.

Bullfrog Spas’ 100% closed-cell, full foam design insulates the spa completely to prevent heat escape, even in the coldest climates, and a premium, tight-fitting Patio Performance™ cover that is designed to keep cool air out and prevent heat from escaping.

In the End

Choosing the right spa for your unique situation can take a lot of research and work. It’s tough to know if each spa brand is or does exactly as the website claims, so we suggest that you read reviews from other customers and, if you’re able, visit a local spa dealer where you can test out the differences for yourself, whether by seeing with your eyes or taking a test soak with your whole body. See what really works for you and which features can be altered for your needs.
All in all, we hope this information is helpful as you choose your ideal hot tub.

You might be wondering if you should spend the money to invest in a hot tub, or if it would be easier or better if you just got a jetted bathtub in your home. The two may sound as if they have a lot of similarities, and that’s true. They do. But their uses are significantly different, from size to benefits, to functionality and maintenance.

Hm. Maybe they’re not as similar as you were thinking? Let’s dissect this line of thought.

What’s the Difference?

A hot tub (often called a spa) is a freestanding, portable tub of heated water. It’s typically designed to be used by multiple people at once (usually between two and eight) for relaxation purposes, massage and hydrotherapy benefits, and social or family bonding time.

A jetted bathtub must be integrated into the design of your bathroom, and it’s typically filled and drained each time it’s used. Jetted tubs are built to accommodate only one or two people at a time, in a much more private setting.

But let’s break it down further.

Size

Hot tubs are made to comfortably accommodate 2-8 (or more) people at once.

Jetted bathtubs are intended for a single user, and in some rare cases, a maximum of two users at once.

Purpose

Hot tubs are designed to provide hydrotherapy, individual massage for multiple people, and quality time with loved ones.

Bathtubs are used mainly for bathing to get clean. The added jets can make it a more relaxing experience.

Location

In general, hot tubs are used outdoors or occasionally indoors in a specially designed space that can tolerate extreme humidity. They are intended to hold water year-round in most locales.

Bathtubs are built and intended strictly for indoor use within a designated bathroom, which is usually private to the user.

Water care

Hot tubs are intended to remain filled with water that lasts for three to six months, with proper filtration and chemical balancing. They are heated by a thermostat that allows the user to regulate it as they prefer. One of the most notable differences between a bathtub and a hot tub is the spa’s ability to maintain a specified heat for an extended period of time.

Bathtubs are filled with tap water that has (hopefully) been run through a water heater. There is no other thermostat or heat control available in a bathtub, so once the bathwater cools, it’s time to get out and drain your water. There is no real water care necessary, but the tub must be refilled each time it is used, and ideally, the tub (and jets) cleaned.

Price

Hot tubs are mostly self-contained, and though they are likely a more expensive cost up front, down the road, they earn their keep through the benefits they offer. Water use for this type of tub remains at a minimum because if the water is well-cared-for, the spa won’t need to be drained and refilled for up to six months.

Most hot tubs will cost between $6,000 and $20,000+ and require some extra electrical work, as well as site preparation for wherever you intend to put the spa.

Bathtubs can get pricey as well, and require some complex construction to install in your home. They don’t require costly chemicals, but they do require a significant amount of water each time they are filled, making them less likely to be used as often.

Quality jetted bathtubs cost between $1,000 and $3,000 and go up from there, but require up front plumbing, electrical, and a significant amount of construction to install, and they can only be installed in a bathroom.

Jets and Therapy

Hot tubs vary from simple designs with only a few low-power jets, to intricate acrylic shells with a high jet count. While jetted bathtubs also vary from simple to complicated, bathtubs typically are only big enough to offer six to eight jets. Bigger tubs might offer a few more, but all jets are run on a single pump, so that power is fairly limited.

The Bullfrog Spas patented JetPak Therapy System® is unique to all other brands because the system allows users to pick and choose the JetPaks that will be best for them, essentially personalizing their spa according to personal goals, needs, and desires for multiple different massage options. This is not something that is available in a bathtub, and it is worth at least looking into, if you’re able. The benefits are significant.

Comfort and Relaxation

Let’s be honest here. Both a bathtub and a hot tub have comfort and relaxation benefits. The question you should ask yourself is which type of benefits are more important to you. Will you be using the tub primarily to get clean and relax after a long day’s work? Or will you be using it more for recovery from physical and mental labor? Is it important to you to have the more powerful massaging jets? And are there other members of your family or household who would like to use it as well? How often do you foresee your tub being used?

The more often the tub will be used, and the number of people you intend to have use it might play a big part in deciding which type of spa is best for you.

Additional Costs

We discussed the price of the actual tubs above, but we haven’t discussed the other costs associated with having a tub installed.

Bathtub

As mentioned above, the cost of the actual bathtub is going to be around $1,000-$3000, but then there are the costs of removing your old tub or shower fixture (unless you’re in an unfinished space) plus additional plumbing needs (which should be done by professionals) to make sure the tub has sufficient drainage, a specific electrical line that can accommodate the pump (or pumps) and has a safety shutoff valve, and then the actual construction costs to have it installed. This will most likely also involve a range of time that can take a week or longer.

Hot Tub

The hot tub itself is going to start around $6,000-$20,000 depending on the size, qualities, and features. Once you’ve ordered your hot tub, you’ll need to prepare a level, even pad for it to be placed on, and hire an electrician to run the required circuit. Once the hot tub is delivered, it takes only a few hours to finish installation and get the tub filled with water and start the heating and water care process. This means your hot tub will be usable within hours of it being delivered and installed.

Additional Benefits of a Hot Tub

While the jetted bathtub is an excellent home addition, it’s a solitary use item, and doesn’t really allow for any adjustment on that front. A hot tub is designed and intended for use by multiple people, so while you’re relaxing and enjoying the excellent massage benefits, the rest of your family can be enjoying it with you. This allows for excellent quality time together. Whether or not your family is able to have dinner together every night, you might be surprised how much extra effort is made for those same family members to make it to use your hot tub. That alone is worth its weight in gold. Don’t you think?
