If you own a swim spa, or are considering a swim spa purchase, at some point in your journey you will find yourself asking which swim spa accessories will help you maximize your usage. While the answer to that question will be slightly different for each family or individual, maximizing your experience is easy with a range of swim spa accessories designed to complement your swim spa.

From practical additions to luxurious enhancements, here’s a guide to some swim spa accessories  that can elevate your hydrotherapy experience.

Swim Spa Covers

The right cover will save energy costs, assist in keeping your spa water clean, and lower the rate at which your spa water evaporates. A hot tub cover can also protect from extreme weather and winds. Not to mention that a cover is crucial for the safety of others.

There are many options of swim spa covers, such as vinyl, automatic, and roll covers. The most common cover is vinyl. They are usually filled with foam for insulation and can come in various thicknesses and colors. Automatic covers are operated electronically, covering, and uncovering the spa with the push of a button. They provide safety and insulation, like the vinyl covers. However, they do tend to be a bit more expensive due to the automation feature. Another popular option is a roll cover. They are typically less expensive and are great if you are looking for something quick and easy to manage, especially during the summer. During the winter months, we recommend switching back to an insulated cover such as a vinyl.

Cover Lifter

Since swim spa covers are large, a cover lift can make uncovering your swim spa a breeze. You simply push the spa cover open with a levered handle. Cover lifters can make it easy for anyone to use and enjoy.

A cover lifter is an optional Bullfrog Spas Swim Series accessory. Not only is it supposed to make opening your spa easier, but it also adds an extra layer of privacy on the ends of the spa to make swimming and playing more relaxing.

Water Care Options

Investing in a reliable and effective water care system for your swim spa can be a decision that contributes significantly to the overall enjoyment and longevity of your spa experience. A well-maintained water care system ensures that the water remains balanced, free from contaminants, and safe for regular use. Water care upgrades can be beneficial as maintenance can be time consuming and tedious sometimes.

For this reason, Bullfrog Spas has decided to make our ultra-premium water care system, Clear Comfort, come standard with all Swim Series spas. This system is designed to make maintenance easier, the water healthier, and your experience more enjoyable.

Swim Spa Steps

Unless you’re installing your spa below ground, it’s going to be necessary to provide some way for you and others to get in and out of your spa. Swim spa steps provide a stable and secure entry and exit point, making it easier for users of all ages to get and out comfortably. They serve as a preventative measure against slips and falls, promoting a safer environment around the swim spa.

Choosing swim spa steps that seamlessly complement the design and aesthetics of your swim spa can elevate the overall look and feel of your backyard oasis. It can create a cohesive and visually appealing outdoor space. This attention to detail not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also contributes to a harmonious and well-designed backyard environment.

The Bullfrog Spas Swim Series Steps feature non-slip tread surfaces and handrail for extra secure access. They are also designed to be stylish and to match your swim spa aesthetic.

Fitness Kits and Swim Tethers

Fitness kits are essential swim spa exercise accessories for individuals looking to optimize their aquatic routines. These comprehensive kits typically include resistance bands and other specialized equipment designed to enhance the effectiveness of swim spa workouts. By incorporating these fitness tools, users can customize their exercise regimens to target specific muscle groups, improve cardiovascular fitness, and achieve overall body conditioning. The resistance provided by these swim spa exercise accessories adds an extra layer of challenge to swimming sessions, helping users burn more calories and build strength. Additionally, swim spa fitness kits offer a versatile and convenient solution for achieving a full-body workout in the comfort of one’s own backyard, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle without the need for a traditional swimming pool or a gym membership.

swim spa class

Swim tethers are a beneficial swim spa exercise accessory for workouts as well. Tethers are designed to keep swimmers stationary, allows swimmers to maintain a consistent swimming stroke against the resistance. It offers a challenging cardiovascular workout without the need for a full-size lap pool. The swim spa tether is versatile, accommodating various swimming styles and skill levels. It not only promotes endurance and cardiovascular health but also aids in refining swim techniques.

Bullfrog Spas offers simple multi-functional swim spa exercise accessories including a swim tether and fitness kit with adjustable row bar, handles, and resistance bands of different lengths and strengths for a variety of full-body workout options.

Audio System

Whether you’re playing the top hits of the day, instrumental music, or the soothing sounds of a beach—having in-spa audio makes it easy to leave your device behind and simply focus on the moment. An audio system not only add a layer of entertainment and relaxation but can serve as motivation for fitness exercises.

Bullfrog Spas Swim Series  premium audio system provides rich sound, clear high tones, in-spa subwoofer, and the perfect surround sound experience. You can play music, or your favorite podcast by connecting to your phone or digital audio player.

Control In-App Capability

With the popularity of smart home capability, smart app technology is another accessory option. Smart Control is designed to make your swim spa experience convenient and customized. Swim spa users can effortlessly manage and monitor their swim spa settings remotely using their smart device at any place at any time.

The Bullfrog Spas CloudControl 2 Wifi Module system is both Google and Alexa pairable and allows you to control your Bullfrog Spa from your smartphone or tablet.  You can monitor temperature, lights, pumps, and filtration settings.

Non-Slip Aquatic Surface Package

Adding a non-slip aquatic surface package into your swim spa can significantly enhance safety. Traction control systems use advanced technology to minimize the risk of slips and falls by providing a secure grip on the spa’s surfaces. It ensures that users can maintain stability during exercises or leisurely activities. This feature is particularly valuable for individuals engaging in aquatic workouts, as it reduces the likelihood of injuries and enhances the effectiveness of exercises. By mitigating the potential hazards associated with slippery surfaces, traction control systems contribute to a safer and more enjoyable swim spa environment, promoting confidence and peace of mind for users of all ages and fitness levels.

Bullfrog Spas Swim Series spas comes standard with a Non-Slip Aquatic Surface Package made with SwimDek® designed with this purpose in mind. They are made with a soft, durable foam that doesn’t absorb water and provides traction. You can also optionally add a premium version for additional comfort and traction.

Tall individuals often face unique challenges when it comes to finding products that cater to their specific needs, and hot tubs are no exception. When it comes to unwinding and enjoying a relaxing soak, comfort is key. In this guide, we’ll explore some of the best hot tubs designed with tall people in mind and what features to look out for, ensuring that everyone can experience the ultimate relaxation without compromising on comfort.

A hot tub tailored for tall individuals excels in several key features to ensure optimal comfort and relaxation. It should offer ample interior space with deep seating arrangements, allowing tall users to fully stretch out and submerge themselves comfortably. The design should consider the natural contours of the body, providing adequate support and alignment for those with above-average height. Customizable jet configurations are crucial, allowing users to target specific muscle groups effectively. A well-designed hot tub for tall people prioritizes a spacious and open layout, ensuring unrestricted movement and an immersive soaking experience. Additionally, ergonomic seating and thoughtful placement of jets enhance the overall hydrotherapy experience, providing a perfect blend of luxury and functionality for individuals seeking a truly accommodating and rejuvenating soak.

Size and Depth

The size of a hot tub is crucial for tall individuals as it directly impacts their overall experience. A larger hot tub provides more space for individuals with longer limbs, allowing them to fully stretch out and relax without feeling cramped. Adequate legroom becomes essential for tall users to fully enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the hot tub, promoting better circulation and muscle relief. Additionally, a spacious hot tub can fit a group of people more comfortably. In contrast, a smaller hot tub may restrict movement and the ability to fully immerse.

The depth of a hot tub holds particular significance in optimizing tall hot tub users’ experience. A deep hot tub ensures that the water level is high enough to submerge your neck and shoulders. This immersion helps with the distribution of buoyancy and provides a more encompassing massage for muscles and joints. A deep hot tub can cater to the specific needs of taller individuals, and hot tub users in general, offering a more satisfying soak that benefits the entire body. A shallower hot tub might leave certain areas exposed, limiting the effectiveness of the hydrotherapeutic experience for tall people.

Bullfrog Spas offers a diverse range of hot tubs, providing options for many preferences and needs. This extends to both size and depth, ensuring that users can find the perfect fit for all body types. We recognize the appeal of deep hot tubs and offer hot tubs and swim spas of various depths. Swim spas, with their design and greater depth, offer a unique solution for those desiring a deep soak coupled with the ability to do aquatic exercises. This versatility exemplifies Bullfrog Spas’ dedication to providing a comprehensive range of options, accommodating different tastes and lifestyles.

Jets

The customization of jets in a hot tub is particularly important for people seeking a hydrotherapy experience. Bullfrog Spas offers the customizable JetPak Therapy System that allows users to personalize the jet configuration based on their preferences and specific body needs. For tall individuals, this means the ability to choose the right Jetpaks for targeting areas that may require more attention due to height-related muscle tension or discomfort. The customizable JetPak feature ensures that the water jets can be strategically positioned  to help the needs of all body types, delivering a more tailored and effective massage experience. This level of customization offers a personalized hydrotherapy solution that addresses the unique requirements of individuals of different heights.

Layout and Seating

The layout of a hot tub influences the comfort and relaxation of all that use it. A well-designed layout ensures that the seating, footwells, and jet placements accommodate tall hot tub users. Ample legroom prevents any sense of confinement and allows for a fully relaxed and immersive soak. The arrangement of a hot tub ensures that jets target key areas, addressing the specific needs of taller individuals in terms of muscle tension and stress relief. Without thoughtful consideration to layout, a hot tub might inadvertently compromise the comfort and therapeutic benefits for those with greater height, hindering their ability to fully enjoy their hot tub experience.

A variety of seating options allows for all hot tub users to find a seat that fits their body type.  Seating has the same impact as the layout as it can prevents any sense of confinement, allowing for all to fit comfortably in the seat that fits them best. Bullfrog Spas recognizes the importance of accommodating users of varying heights and offers many different hot tub layout and seating options. In essence, a hot tub with many seat options and loungers not only accommodates the physical dimensions of all body types but also helps everyone to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of hydrotherapy. We recommend going into your local dealer or factory store to try out and see for yourself what seating is best for you.

Finding the best hot tub for a tall person involves considering factors like interior space, seating design, and customizable features. The models mentioned above prioritize comfort and relaxation for individuals of varying heights. Investing in a hot tub designed with tall users in mind ensures that everyone can enjoy the therapeutic benefits of hydrotherapy without compromising on comfort.

If you’re considering purchasing a swim spa, you’ve probably noticed that the price tag is slightly (or significantly) higher than a regular spa. It’s an investment. However, swim spas are a lot more affordable than pools. Additional good news is that it is possible to finance swim spas.

Not only that, there are multiple options that we will discuss here. Keep in mind, all financing options are subject to credit approval.

Swim Spa Financing Options

Dealership Financing

One of the most common options for financing is through the hot tub dealership. It’s convenient and easy, and most hot tub companies offer it. In most cases, in-house financing can be handled fairly quickly and customers will know immediately if they’re approved or not. Sometimes financing requires a down payment, and sometimes not. Interest rates change with the market but usually average between 5-15%.

Personal Loan

If you’d like an option that offers a slightly lower interest rate, it’s worth checking with your bank, credit union, or other financial institution. Personal loans aren’t super hard to get if your credit is decent, and especially if you’ve had your institution account for a long time and been consistent with keeping money moving through it. In the case of a personal loan, you’d likely have an opportunity for a fixed interest rate and term. Remember, it’s still an unsecured loan, so your credit will directly affect your interest rate for this type of loan.

HELOC

Home Equity Lines of Credit are another common form of financing for swim spas and other home and yard improvements. The benefit of one of these loans is that you’re able to work with your lending institution in setting payment terms. Because your home is securing the loan, you’re more likely to lock in a lower interest rate. A HELOC is basically a second mortgage that acts like a revolving line of credit. It can be treated very much like a credit card, but with lower rates. The caveat here is that the rate for these loans are variable, which means they can change periodically. Another benefit of this type of loan is that interest on this loan is tax deductible.

The downside to this one is that you’re likely to have escrow, title, and document fees tacked onto your loan, so keep that in mind if you intend to pay it off quickly.

Home Equity Loan

A home equity loan is really similar to the HELOC, except it’s for a fixed amount. Where a HELOC is a revolving line of credit, an equity loan gives you the full loan amount upon funding, and you’ll have set payments due every month. Once you have the money in hand (or account), that’s the amount you get, and you can’t withdraw or change the amount except for paying it off or making the monthly payments.

Most homeowners have at least a small amount of equity in their homes which would allow for this type of loan, and it is definitely a beneficial option because the interest rate will be lower, and it’s also tax deductible.

Credit Card

Okay. Let’s be real for a second. If you have a credit card with a limit that’s high enough to purchase a swim spa, that’s awesome. Most credit cards offer interest rates between 12-25%, which is significantly higher than the other options we’ve discussed. In most cases, it’s painful to see the amount of interest you end up paying on a credit card purchase of this size. BUT if it’s the only option, it’s still an option, and there are people who prefer to do things this way. Or, you could always make the initial purchase with a credit card and then pay it off once your personal or home loan has processed. If you’re a miles collector, this might be your option of choice. Who doesn’t want free stuff or cash back on your biggest purchases?

All that said, financially speaking, credit cards are really only good for short-term financing.

Monthly Payment Examples

While financing terms and offers will vary from one loan to the next, it’s useful to have a general idea of what your spa finance payments may look like. Let’s take a look at a few scenarios with different amounts borrowed, different interest rates, and different terms. If your financial institution offers a loan financing calculator, even better. Most of them do, so it might help you to check out how much your swim spa would cost monthly if you obtained a loan that way.

Amount financed: 10,000

At 0% APR for 36 months, your monthly payment would be $277.78.

At 5% APR for 36 months, your monthly payment would be $299.71.

At 10% APR for 36 months, your monthly payment would be $322.67.

At 15% APR for 36 months, your monthly payment would be $346.65.

Amount financed 15,000

At 0% APR for 36 months, your monthly payment would be $416.67.

At 5% APR for 36 months, your monthly payment would be $449.56.

At 10% APR for 36 months, your monthly payment would be $484.01.

At 15% APR for 36 months, your monthly payment would be $519.98.

Amount financed: 20,000

At 0% APR for 36 months, your monthly payment would be $555.56.

At 5% APR for 36 months, your monthly payment would be $599.42.

At 10% APR for 36 months, your monthly payment would be $645.34.

At 15% APR for 36 months, your monthly payment would be $693.31.

Amount financed 25,000

At 0% APR for 36 months, your monthly payment would be $694.44.

At 5% APR for 36 months, your monthly payment would be $729.47.

At 10% APR for 36 months, your monthly payment would be $806.68.

At 15% APR for 36 months, your monthly payment would be $866.63.

Swim Spa Pricing Overview

Swim spas are generally priced from $15,000 to $40,000 or more depending on quality, with an average swim spa costing around $25,000-30,000. They can be a cost-effective option when compared to purchasing a traditional swimming pool, which typically costs between $40,000-70,000+.

A swim spa comes as a unit that is fully functioning and only requires some electrical wiring and a level, even spa pad, which means installation can be completed in a day or two. Conversely, installing a traditional swimming pool involves an entire construction project which can take weeks or months to complete, and often has a handful of unexpected costs.

When you’re considering adding a pool or swim spa to your home or backyard, when you begin your initial research, you may feel a little bit overwhelmed with the potential options and possibilities. Sometimes, there really can be too much of a good thing. This is one of those times, right? But no worries! We’re here to help.

Your household needs are going to be different from others, so the determining factors for your decision have to be dependent on what’s best for you and your household. Let’s explore the differences between a swim spa and a traditional swimming pool to help you make a solid decision about which is best for you.

Swim Spa vs Pool Cost

When you purchase a swim spa, it comes as one all-inclusive unit, so your up-front costs are not going to change much. You will still have to provide some electrical wiring and a level hot tub pad for it to be placed on, but once you have those things handled, your swim spa’s components are all included in your purchase, so you know exactly what you’re in-for, cost-wise. Swim spas are typically more budget-friendly than traditional pools. The cost of a typical swim spa ranges from $25,000-$50,000, depending on the size and features.

There are many aspects that influence the cost of a swimming pool, such as the pool type, size, shape, features, and permits. Price will vary widely depending on where you live, your yard design and space, the complications that might arise from digging deep into the ground in your yard, etc. Then you have to decide if you’re getting a fiberglass shell or going with a gunite one. Are you adding additional features, like a tile surround, pool decking, and will you also be digging a spa that is separate from your pool? How many pumps will your chosen size require and what is the maintenance system going to cost in time and money?

All the extra items that you can’t get in a swim spa are going to cost you. On average, an in-ground swimming pool can cost anywhere from $30,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the factors mentioned above. Keep in mind that this is just the initial construction cost, and there are ongoing maintenance expenses to consider as well.

No matter what the initial estimate looks like, you should be prepared to pay around 35% down before construction can begin—and be sure to estimate in some contingency funds because construction always, always has variables that come up.

DESIGN MY SPA & GET A PRICE

Swim Spa vs Pool Size

Swim spas range in size from 12-25+ feet long, so they are much easier to fit into smaller backyard spaces. Even if your yard is bigger, the size of a swim spa allows you to have a little bit of a lot of things. A BBQ area, seating, swimming area, spa, etc. All at the same time!

Let’s be honest here. When it comes to parties or large family activities, pools have more space for playing. You can install a diving board and have a deep end, which is not available in a swim spa. Because each backyard pool is custom installed, you have more opportunities to choose the size, shape, depth, and functionality of your pool. And, you know, it’s possible to add a water slide to a traditional pool, which is kind of cool—if you like waterslides (and who doesn’t?).

Swim Spa vs Pool Installation

As mentioned in the cost section, most swim spas come as a single all-inclusive unit that is free-standing, so when it comes to installation, as long as you have the pad and electrical wiring ready to go prior to delivery, installation can be done in as little as a single day. It might take another day to fill with water and get the chemical system started, then some time to get the water heated to your desired temperature (since most swim spas come with an integrated water heater—another bonus!) so your spa can realistically be ready to use within two days of delivery, if not sooner.

Traditional pools almost always require on-site project construction type work. You know the drill, right? Excavation, pouring concrete, building a deck (prior to or after installation, depending on the type of pool you’ve chosen). All of this requires permits, drawings, mapping, and other pre-construction prep. You’re looking at a minimum of weeks or months to get your pool installed and usable. If you’re not in a hurry, and you prefer a larger body of water that can be dug deeper than a swim spa, it might be worth the wait—but if those things don’t matter, the complication of installation is really a point to consider.

Swim Spa vs Pool Maintenance

No matter what you choose, there’s going to be some maintenance involved. Luckily, because a swim spa is an all-in-one kind of deal that usually includes a pressure filtration system. For instance, Bullfrog Spas Swim Series models come with Clear Comfort, an award-winning AOP system that delivers the easiest way to get the best, healthiest and most enjoyable water with the lowest possible chlorine levels.

A traditional pool may have options to add on a gravity system and in rare cases, possibly a pressure filtration system, but those are going to be cost and labor additions, no matter what you do.

Another point to consider is that swim spa water filters faster than a traditional pool. Because the filtration system in a swim spa is pressure filtered, it is constantly filtering water, which means that the entire body of water can be completely filtered in a matter of minutes, whereas a larger, traditional pool is typically fully filtered every twelve to eighteen hours.

Part of the process of designing and installing your pool should include deciding on a maintenance system. You’ll need a pump, a filtration system (or two), a cleaning process, and possibly a safety cover. It’s important that you research these system possibilities and find one that is not overwhelming to you. This is one of the sections where a swim spa is appealing to many people because most manufacturers have these systems pre-built into each spa unit, and all you have to do is follow their instructions for maintenance.

Other Points to Consider

Fitness and Health Benefits

Watch the video to learn how Flora Duffy uses her swim spa after her training and for her recovery.

If you’re making this purchase with fitness in mind, most swim spas come with current systems that are specific to workout programs and conditioning. They are not the greatest for swimming laps, per se, but they are better than a regular pool if you want to be able to adjust the resistance and power of the current you’re swimming against.

When it comes to rehabilitation, adjustability is often key because you start out on a lower power setting, and build up as injured muscles regain strength. This is not possible in a traditional pool.

If your goal is to swim laps in still water, a pool will probably do the trick. However, if your goal is to strengthen your swim stroke or your speed or to rehab injured muscles, it’s important to keep in mind that traditional pools do not come with swim current systems that can be adjusted for these purposes. You’re less likely to be able to purchase and use accessories like row bars, exercise bars, and resistance bands that are designed to be used with a current system.

Did we mention the Bullfrog Spas Swim Series Zero Gravity Spa Hammock? This accessory is unlike anything you’ll see anywhere else. Imagine the feeling of being suspended in water, free from gravity’s grasp, while feeling the soothing effects of swim current waves moving beneath you. You simply cannot get this effect in a traditional pool.

Portability and Design Flexibility

We discussed this in the installation section, but it bears mentioning more in depth here. A swim spa is a fully contained unit, which means that it can be moved around as a whole unit. Let’s say a few years from now you decide to completely redesign your entire backyard. Cool. No digging up a pool and having to rebuild it, because all you have to do is pick up the swim spa and move it to whatever position and placement that suits your new design best. In addition to this, if you ever decide you’d like your swim spa placed indoors, well. That’s possible too.

Well. As awesome as traditional pools can be, once they’re installed, they really can’t be moved or adjusted, so any updates or changes to your yard must be made around the pool. This might not be a big deal if you have a large yard space, but if you don’t, installing an in-ground pool might eliminate the possibility of also having a BBQ space or other gathering space in your yard.

Energy Costs

These days, swim spas are designed specifically with energy efficiency in mind. They now come fully insulated, some super-insulated, and most brands provide a cover that keeps the heat inside. They also require less water to fill and need refilling less often, which is something to consider if you happen to live in a desert area that often experiences drought conditions.

In-ground pools are typically designed to be insulated naturally, using the ground in which they’re buried. When that ground is frozen, so is the water in the pool. If you happen to live in a place with really harsh winters, you might have to invest in a water heater, or your pool will likely need to be drained of water and the pipes blown out in order to avoid damage to the pool and pump system.

Most pools hold a lot more water than the typical swim spa, which means the pumps and heater (if you have one) will naturally consume more energy. In addition to this, if your pool does not have a cover, it’s constantly exposed to the elements, which means any heat or warmth in the water is escaping or evaporating into the environment and that environment is escaping into your pool. Leaves, dust, rain—you name it, your filtration system is fighting it, which means it’s working harder and consuming more energy.

Year-Round Use

Swim spas offer a versatile solution for year-round enjoyment, thanks to their unique combination of a swimming pool and hot tub features. During the colder months, the hot tub aspect of a swim spa provides warmth and relaxation even when the temperatures drop. This makes it ideal for soothing sore muscles, relieving stress, and enjoying therapeutic hydrotherapy sessions, regardless of the weather outside. Additionally, the hot tub feature allows for social gatherings and family bonding in a comfortable and inviting environment.

As the seasons change, the swim spa can seamlessly transition into a refreshing swimming pool, providing a space for aquatic exercise, recreational swimming, and cooling off during the warmer months. This versatility ensures that swim spas can be enjoyed throughout the year, offering both relaxation and fitness benefits to users regardless of the season.

How to Decide Which is Best for You

This is something only you can decide, but it might help to consider the points we’ve just discussed. How big is your backyard? What is your intention in using it? Will you need/want to use it year-round or seasonally? How much time are you able or willing to dedicate to maintenance? Would you also like a high-quality spa experience with your pool?

If you are considering a swim spa but are on the fence about whether to purchase it or not, you may be wondering what benefits a swim spa would provide you and your family. Luckily, swim spas provide lots of health benefits, financial benefits, family and social benefits, and more. Here are some of our favorite swim spa benefits.

Save Space Compared to a Pool

This allows you to optimize your yard space for maximum usability. Swim spas are generally not as big as pools, so they can be installed in much smaller yards and, in some cases, even indoors. (But keep in mind some brands do come in larger sizes, too.)

In addition, most states have safety requirements for bodies of water that could create a drowning hazard. If you’re not prepared to install a full-size pool and include a fence, you might be better off with a swim spa that comes with a locking cover.

More Affordable than a Pool

Swim spas are more affordable and often more efficient than in-ground swimming pools, since they come with built-in insulation, and smaller swim tanks. High-quality swim spas can be operated on a few dollars a day, depending on their size and the capacity of their pumps and systems.

In the United States, installing an in-ground swimming pool cost anywhere from $40,000 – $100,000 or more, but a high-quality swim spa costs around $20,000-$45,000, depending on your area, the brand you choose, and the options the spa includes.

Swim Spas Provide a Current

A swim current is designed to create different levels of resistance for optimal fitness benefits, allowing you to build endurance and strength with swim workouts and drills. If the spa offers options for variable swim current settings, you can sometimes custom tailor your routine according to your body type for maximum benefits such as lowering blood pressure and improving heart and lung health.

Swim Spa Health Benefits

Watch the video to learn how Flora Duffy uses her swim spa after her training and for her recovery.

Physical Benefits

  • Alleviates stress
  • Improves coordination, balance, and posture
  • Improves flexibility
  • Post-injury / surgery recovery
  • Cools body on hot days
  • Low impact on body and joints
  • Builds endurance, muscle, and strength
  • Excellent source of cardio for a healthier heart, lungs, and weight
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Need we say more?

Mental Health Benefits

Let’s face it. When our bodies break down—whether from stress, injury, lack of movement, or other reasons—our mental health suffers, too.

When we give our bodies the benefit of hydrotherapy and/or swimming, we are giving ourselves the gift of feeling better physically, which helps us feel better mentally. Since swimming is an all-over body workout, all of your muscles get some level of activation, which releases endorphins—natural feel-good hormones that increase positivity and bring about a feeling of happiness.

Healthier Home-life

Thanks to today’s hurry-up culture, it can be hard for families to find time to gather together. Anymore, even traditional family dinners are often forgone or altered to accommodate multiple schedules. The family bonding that takes place in your swim spa will be unparalleled by other family gatherings.

Studies show that quality family time improves academic performance, decreases the instances of behavioral issues, lowers the chance of violence and drug abuse, creates stronger self-confidence, better conflict resolution skills, and increases chances of success for all members of your family.

Combines Benefits of Pool & Hot Tub in One

One purchase, one installation, one chemical treatment system, one fixed space, and an attraction that can be used year-round.

In addition to the benefits of swimming, your swim spa might come equipped with spa seats, featuring massaging jets—a feature that comes with its own set of health benefits, on top of what you get from swimming. The Bullfrog Spas Swim Series models come equipped with JetPak seats and a number of other proprietary benefits that will have you hooked for life.

Improves Your Outdoor Living Space

When you buy a Bullfrog Spas Swim Series model, you’ll enjoy an upgraded backyard water experience unlike any other, including the option to choose a swim spa that is aesthetically pleasing and designed to go with your landscape and design. With your new swim spa as a centerpiece, your space will become the envy of everyone who sees it.

Relish your time soaking and swimming in a Bullfrog Spas Swim Series for a multi-functional backyard water experience. These versatile swim spas offer an attractive mix of functional, fun, and aesthetically appealing features and are equipped with the one-of-a-kind JetPak Therapy System that is exclusive to Bullfrog Spas models. Enjoy multi-level therapy seats, ergonomic headrests, and leg and foot therapy, or take advantage of unlimited options for fitness and water play in these truly remarkable swim spas.

When it comes to making investments in your home, swim spas can be on the pricey side of the road, but in general, swim spas are built to last. They’re not a small item to build, and at some point, it’s hard to cut too many corners in the interest of lowering prices. However, it’s important that you invest wisely and choose a reputable brand that is known for quality materials, construction, and service since these things will directly impact the lifespan of your swim spa.

Typically, swim spas should last between five and twenty years, but the way you care for your spa also makes a difference. Let’s look at some of the important components to consider when choosing a reliable swim spa that will last as long as possible and some ways you can extend that time frame.

Frame and Construction

Most companies still build the frame and base of their swim spas out of wood or metal. These materials might save costs on the manufacturing end, but they both have the potential to rot or corrode over time. Look for a company that uses ABS for construction of the base and frame of their spas.

Each Bullfrog Spa is built on our patented EnduraFrame™ support structure, a sturdy molded ABS spa frame made with no wood or metal so it will never rot or corrode. The molded ABS EnduraBase™, EnduraBeam™ structural columns and other EnduraFrame™ components are precision aligned the exact same way every time with no human error. Extra supports are added in high-usage areas to strengthen overall spa integrity and support the thousands of pounds of water the spa will hold.

Warranty

Whenever a company is confident in the quality of what they’re building, they’ll offer a warranty for that part or feature. Be sure to take a look at the product’s warranty to get an idea of how confident the company is in each part. At a minimum, this will give you a basic idea of how long you can expect each component to last. For instance, Bullfrog Spas warrants the EnduraFrame™ for the lifetime of the swim spa owner. That’s not a small amount of time and says a lot about Bullfrog Spas’ confidence in our product.

Plumbing

Let’s face it. Nobody wants a leak in their spa, especially a swim spa, which holds so much more water than the average hot tub. Make sure to choose a company with an advanced plumbing system that helps eliminate leaks and makes them easier to find and fix if they do happen, and that has a top-notch service department who can get out to look at your spa without a months-long wait.

Pumps & Heaters

Most hot tub pumps and heaters will last roughly 7-10 years in well-maintained, well-balanced water. In poorly balanced water, however, their lifespan can be drastically reduced as key components break down.

If your water is consistently acidic or your sanitizer levels always high, water will being to seep into the motor, causing it to rust and eventually seize. Hot tub heater elements are also very sensitive to water balance issues. Basic (high PH or alkalinity) or hard (high calcium hardness) water can also cause scale to build up on the heater; greatly reducing its ability to function.

Covers

Insulating your hot tub is always great, but it’s kind of pointless without a high-quality Hot tub cover. This is another area where it’s important to regularly clean and maintain it in order to give it a longer life average. When your cover becomes waterlogged and heavy, or it begins to cup, it can no longer effectively do its job of insulating the hot tub and should be replaced.

Shell & Cabinet

The shell, structure and outer cabinet of a hot tub can last up to 20-30 years. Simply clean off the cabinet periodically with a hose and ensure that any minor leaks are quickly repaired and you should never have an issue with the structural components of your hot tub (unless they are wood or metal).

Pillows

Hot tub pillows typically last anywhere from three to five years in a well-maintained spa. Follow the instructions that come with your owners manual to make them last even longer than average.

Tips to Make Your Swim Spa Last Longer

  • Keep up with a consistent maintenance and cleaning schedule.
  • Follow the guidelines listed in your owner’s manual for using any features and accessories.
  • Make sure to supervise when guests or children use the spa who may not be as familiar with how it works and could be more likely to break something.
  • Think of your swim spa the same way you might view a car. Regular maintenance and care will go a long way.

When you’re in the market for a swim spa, deciding on the right model and variety can get complicated. There are so many variables. A common question that comes up when buyers are comparing a regular hot tub with a swim spa model is whether or not both types can be used during winter months.

Using a hot tub in the winter offers unique benefits like raising the users’ core temperature, relaxing and massaging muscles that ache due to the cold, and increasing circulation. But can the same benefits be found by using a swim spa during winter?

The short answer is yes. Absolutely. As long as your swim spa has a strong heating system that keeps the water temperature above freezing, there’s no better place to relax, unwind, and even get in a little exercise while you’re there.

Benefits of a Swim Spa in the Winter

Break from the Winter Norm

Endless days and weeks of cold, sometimes snowy/icy weather can be a major downer, especially for those who are used to being outside a lot during the warm months. Utilizing a heated swim spa can offer a temporary escape from the doldrums, keep you outside in the fresh air, and creates a bit of a backyard oasis, no matter the weather.

Treatment for Sore Muscles

The swim spa models that come with jet therapy, such as the Bullfrog Spas Swim Series add the additional benefit of the same types of hydrotherapy massages offered in other Bullfrog Spas hot tub models. Reduce inflammation and chronic pain while enjoying the outdoor weather—without freezing.

Year-round Exercise Options

If you’re looking at a swim spa, it’s likely the workout options are part of the draw. Because you can control the water temperature and decide how warm to keep your water, it’s possible to workout in your swim spa during any time of year—winter included.

Cost to Heat a Swim Spa in Winter

Obviously, this question comes with variables and potential differences depending on where you live. The main thing you’re probably wondering is if keeping your swim spa heated all winter will break the bank. The short of it is this: it depends on the spa. This is one of those situations where the quality of the spa you choose makes a huge difference.

Here are a few points to consider:

What material makes up the base of the spa?

This matters because heat has a tendency to seep into the ground when it’s cold, and if you’re in an area where the ground is constantly frozen, the base of your spa could be a place where you lose a significant amount of heat. So, find out what your spa is made of and how well it helps to insulate your water.

How well is the spa insulated?

We cannot stress this point enough. Excellent insulation is the biggest difference between loss of heat—or not. The harder your heater has to work to keep the water at the correct temperature, the more energy it uses, and that just costs you more money on a regular, consistent basis. No one needs that!

Is the cover high quality? Does it seal well?

The spa cover is the most common place for hot tubs and swim spas to lose the most significant amount of heat. Make sure your cover is thick, seals well when closed, and that it’s able to keep the heat inside the hot tub without allowing a lot of steam to escape.

What type of system heats the water?

Is it energy efficient and made to also utilize the heat created by the other spa components like the motor and the pumps? How hard does it have to work when the temperature is close to or below freezing?

If you look at the Bullfrog Spas Swim Series, you’ll find a great example of swim spas that are made to be well-insulated and energy efficient.

What Temperature Should I Keep My Swim Spa in Winter?

When your spa is in swim mode and being used for that purpose often, the average winter usage temperature falls between 69-99 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re using the spa more for hydrotherapy purposes and change it to hot tub mode, it might be more comfortable to keep it somewhere between 100-104 degrees.

A Few Tips for Using a Swim Spa in the Winter

  • Keep a robe and sandals nearby to keep you warm when returning inside
  • Invest in a towel heater so you can have heated towels available for when you’re done.
  • Shovel any accumulated snow off the cover as soon as possible.
  • Keep the path from inside your home to the spa clear of snow for safe entry and exit.
  • Take advantage of spa lighting to light the way on dark evenings or mornings.
  • Consider adding a pergola, awning, umbrella, or a Covana cover to cut down on rain or snow accumulation

If you’re considering buying a swim spa, you might be feeling confused or overwhelmed by all the different types and styles of swim spas available. You’re not alone! Like with hot tubs, there is a lot of information to wade through to find the information you need. Let’s talk more about different types of swim spas and the purpose of each.

Exercise Swim Spas

Watch the video to learn how Flora Duffy uses her swim spa after her training and for her recovery.

An exercise swim spa is created mainly for the sole purpose of swimming or other water workout options. It’s not usually intended as water therapy in the same way as a hot tub, and in lieu of jetted seats, comes outfitted with a high-power swim current system of some variety, which allows the user to swim against currents for different levels of exercise.

A swim spa intended solely for exercise may not have any seats at all, and no blowers for jet therapy. This spa is often deeper, and longer in length than the average hot tub or dual-purpose swim spa, with easy entry and exit steps, and sometimes comes equipped with built-in connection points where optional accessories can be installed for use. For example, a swim tether or row bar.

Bullfrog Spas offers this type of accessories, as well as the extremely cool Zero Gravity Spa Hammock that is designed specifically for our Swim Series™ line. We do not offer a swim spa that is solely intended for workouts or swimming, because we believe in the JetPak Therapy System™ too much to not include it, and we believe in giving customers the best product we can for the money they are spending.

Combination Swim Spas

Swim spas that come with jetted seat options, as well as a swim current and swimming area, are combination spas. They are generally the most versatile of the swim spa types, because they function as both a spa, as well as a small swimming pool by utilizing the swim current system for the swimming portion, and still allowing for hydrotherapy by including jetted seating options.

The Bullfrog Spas S150, S180XD, and S200 models are examples of this type of swim spa, and still each have a slightly different functionality. For example, the S150 is shorter in length, but can seat up to thirteen people, while the S180XD is three feet longer, but only seats five people and S200 is five feet longer, but only seats nine people. This allows for more swimming space, rather than therapy space.

The S150 functions as a large spa with a swim current that allows for some swimming and play, with four JetPak outfitted hydrotherapy seats, a lounger, and a splash pad that adds additional fun. The S180XD and S200 allow a more serious swimmer to utilize the space for workouts and can be ideal for any user from beginner up to advance-level swimmers. They also features a splash pad for playing or cooling down, as well as four JetPak seating options and a lounge. The S200 model takes space from the bench seating on the S150, and adds the additional length in order to allow a stronger, longer swimming capability. When used with the optional accessory packages, it makes for an excellent workout.

All the swim spas showcase multi-level therapy seats, ergonomic headrests, and leg and foot therapy. Users can take advantage of unlimited options, because the functional layout appeals to families, those looking for premium therapy, and fitness enthusiasts alike, all packaged into one truly remarkable spa. Whichever model you choose, you’re getting an upgraded backyard experience unlike any other on the market.

Dual Zone Swim Spas

A dual zone swim spa is usually one unit that has two separate water chambers that each serve a different purpose. The larger of the two is generally the longest one and is used for swimming and workouts.

The smaller is a focused spa area used for hydrotherapy. In many cases, each chamber is powered by different heaters and pumps, so theoretically, your spa could hold water at two different temperatures to allow swimming at one temperature, and relaxing at another.

These spas are basically a swimming pool and hot tub in one unit, with a wall that separates the different types of water. Bullfrog Spas Swim Series does not offer this type of spa…yet. However, wise and patient readers will understand that it could be wise to keep an eye on future announcements, since Bullfrog Spas are just getting started with the Swim Series line.

No matter which swim spa you choose, you can’t go wrong with a multi-functional spa that is designed big enough and well enough to be used for multiple different purposes.

Personalize Your Swim Spa

If you’re considering making an investment in a swim spa, you’re probably wondering how to differentiate which size is best for you and your unique situation. The biggest difference between a swim spa and a pool or hot tub is size. A swim spa is bigger than a traditional spa, but still has some (or all) of the same functionality, plus additional features that give your spa the ability to be treated like a much larger pool—only, using a smaller amount of space.

But how small is too small and how big is too big?

Choosing the Best Swim Spa for You

There are a few points you should consider that will help inform your decision about the ideal size swim spa for you.

1. Where will you be putting your swim spa?
2. How deep do you want the spa to be?
3. Will you be placing it partially in-ground, and if so, what sort of prep needs to be done to be ready for your spa?
4. How many people will typically be using the spa?
5. What type of workouts or swimming will be most important to you?
6. What is a realistic budget for your spa and which size spas come close to fitting in that budget? Keep in mind that your budget could be a pay-in-full situation, or a monthly payment option.

Once you’ve considered these questions, it’s time to look at different sized swim spas and figure out what is best for you.

Average Swim Spa Sizes

Typically, swim spas start somewhere around ten to twenty feet long (or more) and five to ten feet wide, and between three and five feet deep. You’ll notice that this is a wide range of sizes, so let’s break it down even further.

What is the Smallest Swim Spa?

If you’re looking for a swim spa that can fit in a tighter space, this is probably the category you’ll fall into, because you can get a swim spa that is ten to twelve feet long, and those are the smallest you’ll find. In a lot of ways, a small swim spa is basically a giant hot tub with jet capabilities that allow for some exercising and swimming. Keep in mind that a smaller swim spa might not be ideal for competition-level swimmers who are taller than six feet. However, it is a good option if you are on the tall end.

The Bullfrog Spas® S150 Swim Series™ model falls into the top end of this small category, coming in at twelve feet long, seven and a half feet wide, and just over four feet deep. Swim, play games, or splash around on the splash pad. Workout, play, or relax away tension. You can build endurance and strength with preset or customizable fitness programs and space for any number of low-impact, water-based workouts.

And because it’s a Bullfrog Spa Swim Series, you can also enjoy the numerous therapy options available with the patented JetPak Therapy System™. The S150 can seat up to thirteen people comfortably on benches and in seats and includes four JetPak™ seats that can be interchanged for different therapy options.

What is the best Medium Sized Swim Spa?

Mid-size swim spas are among the most popular, because that extra few feet of length makes a huge difference in the workout capabilities of the spa, and for people of multiple heights. These spas range from thirteen to eighteen or nineteen feet in length, and between seven or eight feet wide, and four to five feet deep.

The Bullfrog Spas S180XD and S200 Swim Series models fit right in the middle of this category, coming in at fifteen and seventeen feet long, seven and a half feet wide, and just over four feet deep. The S180XD is a bit deeper at five feet deep. These versatile swim spas offers an attractive mix of functional, fun, and aesthetically appealing features, and is also equipped with the JetPak Therapy System®.

The S200 Swim Series spa can seat up to nine people comfortably on benches and in seats. The S180XD Swim Series spa can seat up to five. Both include four multi-level therapy seats equipped with JetPaks™, ergonomic headrests, and leg and foot therapy. Take advantage of unlimited options for fitness and water play.

What is the Largest Swim Spa?

When it comes to swim spa sizes, the largest start at eighteen feet long, and go up to twenty-five feet. In some cases, these swim spas come with separate areas for swimming and relaxing, allowing for a little bit of both in one compact option. For the time being, Bullfrog Spas Swim Series does not make a spa that fits in this category, but keep your eye on our future announcements if you are not able to find a quality swim spa this size from another brand.

The Final Decision

Once you have a good idea of where your spa is going, and what you intend to use it for most often, you’ll have a better idea of where to start looking. Your last questions might have to do with budget. This is another area with a lot of variables, from entry level swim spas, to premium quality models. The Bullfrog Spas models definitely fall in the premium category, and for good reason. You’ll enjoy an upgraded backyard experience that is completely unique and unlike any other swim spa you’ll find on the market.

The best thing you can do is to find a swim spa that fits both your lifestyle and your dimension needs, and that is going to be the most bang for your buck. It’s an investment you won’t regret making.

Purchasing a swim spa isn’t just an investment; it’s a lifestyle change that will benefit your entire family. Only you can decide if a swim spa is a good investment for you. If you’re asking this question, you’ve probably come across one in person or online, and wondered how it’s possible to combine a hot tub and a swimming pool into one multi-purpose piece of recreational equipment. Is it a hot tub? Is it a pool? How can one device do two things well? Believe it or not, it IS possible, and when you find the right one, it’s awesome.

Generally a swim spa is a “portable” above-ground unit that is self-contained. Now, we say portable, because technically they can be moved from space to space. Technically. That said, a swim spa is a significant sized structure to move around, so please don’t think it’s something you can pack up and take with you on vacation.

A swim spa works by pumping water to special jets that create a current system. This current helps you stay in place while you swim. Some swim spas also offer a tether for added stability. Think of a swim spa like a treadmill, but instead of running, you’re swimming to get exercise. Some swim spas even come with pre-programmed and customizable workout programs to vary the intensity of the jets.

Can you really swim in a swim spa?

First thing’s first, let’s discuss the difference in the swimming experience. When you think about swimming, you probably thinking of a large lap pool. Since swim spas are smaller than regular pools, they aren’t exactly set up for lap-swimming. As stated before, swim spas are equipped with a jet system that creates a current against which a swimmer can swim, while staying in place.

For instance, the Bullfrog Spas® Swim Series models are equipped with a unique, anatomically-tuned current system that helps you swim easier and better. The unique orientation of swim jets, one near the surface and one angled up from a bit deeper, creates a current shape that helps keep your body and legs horizontal and your whole body in your swim lane for easier use and more effective workouts. In the Bullfrog Spas Swim Series, you’re able to customize your drills and swim programs to your body type and workout style for optimum results.

So yes, you really can swim in a swim spa. Many swimmers use a swim spa to train at home for competitions, triathlons, or to stay in shape.

This is going to vary according to both the spa’s capabilities, as well as the swimmer’s. The higher-quality spa you purchase, the more variation you’re likely to get. Each different setting allows for a different potential swim speed that works well for a skilled swimmer. When you combine the higher settings with accessories, such as a swim tether which helps hold you in place while you swim, you have the potential for more significant speeds, which may work well for swimmers who are closer to competition level.

What else can you do in a swim spa?

The question here is more like, what can’t you do in a swim spa? Meaning, there are a few things you can’t do, but a LOT that you can do. For instance, you can’t / shouldn’t dive in a swim spa. And we wouldn’t recommend learning to scuba dive in a swim spa. It’s just not deep enough. However, here are some fun ideas of what you can do.

  • Water walking
  • Water yoga
  • Swim workouts
  • Teaching kids to swim
  • Floating on a pool float or Zero Gravity Hammock
  • Body surfing
  • Strength and resistance training
  • Sit in the spa seats and relax
  • Play on the splashpad feature
  • Cool off in warm weather
  • Warm water therapy in cool weather
  • Pool party with friends/family
  • XL hot tub party
  • Water sports like small team volleyball

This list could continue, but you get the idea, right?

Therapy / Relaxation

The Bullfrog Spas Swim Series™ are the only swim spas available that feature the patented Jetpak Therapy System® that allows users to choose between up to 18 interchangeable JetPak® massages.

Each Bullfrog Spas JetPak provides a unique hydromassage experience by targeting different areas of your back, neck, and shoulders and varies in power and intensity. Personalize your Swim Series spa by selecting your favorites, then place the JetPak in your favorite seat and interchange at any time. Adjust the massage power to the way you like it. Enjoy multi-level therapy seats, ergonomic headrests, and leg and foot therapy, or take advantage of unlimited options for fitness and water play. The functional layout appeals to families, those looking for premium therapy, and fitness enthusiasts alike, all packaged into one truly remarkable spa.

Family Fun

Swim spas offer space that you don’t necessarily get in a regular hot tub, so they allow for another level of water play. In addition, this is an excellent place to teach children to swim. They feel reassured because the space is not as large as a traditional pool, while parents can focus on water safety in a more intimate setting. Splash, swim, play, or relax together as a family, or an extended group of friends. Your swim spa just gives you more options for all of your favorite water play and workout options.

There you have it. How a swim spa works will largely depend on your purpose for purchasing it, but no matter the original purpose, you’ll discover more uses, we’re certain. The Bullfrog Spas Swim Series is so versatile, it’s an investment you won’t regret.
